My mother arrived in town Thursday night to help out my sister for ten days. I visited with her yesterday, and as we were driving together she asked me how much time I devote to my writing each day.
"An hour or two," I said. "Well, I need to buckle down," she said back. She explained that she has five writing projects in the works, and none of them is close to being finished. The thing is, it doesn't take much to be a writer. A writer is one who habitually writes. Habits are a matter of choosing to do something in such a way that not doing that thing is the exception, rather than the rule. I am a writer because the days on which I don't write are rare and unexpected. I dedicate a good portion of each day to writing. I may only write for a total of ten uninterrupted minutes on some days, but those ten minutes are given over to what I consider vitally important in my life. What do I do frequently enough that it could be called my habit, for better or worse? Are the habits I cultivate the habits I want shaping my life?
